"School bus"

This is the Indian version of a school bus.

School girls

These girls live in Bahraich which is in the northeast part of India near Nepal.

Outdoor classroom

Children must sit on gunny sacks in this primary school in a village north of Bahraich. At this school there is only one teacher for more than 100 students.

The school girl sitting in the outdoor classroom wears eye makeup to protect her from the evil eye.

The source of water within the school compound is the pump.

Students and staff

Students, Ministry of Education staff and a teacher in the village. The teacher (in the orange sari) is responsible for teaching approximately 200 students.

Participatory exercise

In Bahraich, my colleague, Nishi, is doing a partici- patory exercise with primary school girls to determine how they are treated differently than boys.
